Halloween is fast approaching, and with it comes a collection of ghouls, ghosts and goblins -- not to mention trade shows and conventions sure to make your skin crawl. Horror fans and industry professionals have a wide range of events to choose from, whether their main interest is in special effects or classic horror films. Below is a list of five major horror conventions, most of which have their next iteration in 2017, that are particularly terrifying playgrounds for fans.

Texas Frightmare Weekend
May 5-7, 2017, Dallas
Billed as the Southwest's premier horror convention and attracting over 10,000 visitors, Texas Frightmare Weekend is one of the largest horror conventions in the country, if not the world. The event features many guests from TV and horror film fame, including Danny Trejo, Virginia Madsen, Tom Skerritt and cast members of The Walking Dead. In addition to celebrity panels, the weekend includes showings of cult horror-movie classics, a short-film fest and even a singing competition called "scareyoke."

Arcana
Oct. 21-23, 2016, St. Paul, Minn.
Arcana has stood the test of time, as this year's convention will be the event's 46th anniversary. Billed as a "convention of the dark fantastic," it mostly focuses on literature and art and typically features a horror genre author reading selections from his/her works. Outside of this main event, the convention features panels, discussions, films, an art auction and an open reading. There will be plenty of trade-show booths for attendees to visit throughout Arcana to get their horror fix.

World Horror Convention
Dates for 2017 to be announced, Provo, Utah
The World Horror Convention has more of a professional feel than some other horror events. This event gives people the horror industry a chance to network, but it also provides the opportunity to meet some of their favorite authors, directors and artists. It includes an art sale, roundtables featuring horror pros, and readings that give fans a sense of the personality of some of their favorite authors. The art sale includes hard-to-find and limited-edition novels, making the event a paradise for horror collectors and enthusiasts.

Horror Realm
March 3-6, 2017, Pittsburgh
Unlike the World Horror Convention, Horror Realm is run by fans, and is specifically fans of zombies and horror films. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume and, in addition to panels and exhibitions, the convention includes a horror and zombie film festival, horror flea market and bake sale. Outside of the convention hall, a sponsored scavenger hunt allows teams of four to complete challenges around Pittsburgh, which event creators have dubbed "The Zombie Capital of the World."

Monsterpalooza
April 7-9, 2017, Burbank, Calif.
Entertaining because of its pure reverence for everything horror, Monsterpalooza focuses on classic films and how they were made. Visitors can learn how the makeup and effects were created in some of their favorite films. With its proximity to Hollywood, the convention also attracts high-profile visitors like Guillermo Del Toro, John Landis and other giants of the horror genre.
