On a recent trip down to Orange County, California, to see Mike Birbiglia at the Irvine Improv, I had a chance to check out the renovations at Island Hotel Newport Beach. Called a "top-to-bottom transformation," the project included new décor in the 295 guest rooms; updates to the pool, fitness center and spa; and refreshed meeting space, which totals 23,000 square feet and features the largest ballroom in Newport Beach. The hotel also added the new Oak Grill restaurant and Aqua Lounge, Market Place (offering reasonably priced snacks and beverages) and a 20th -floor Club Lounge in what used to be the presidential suite.
