Local Update

The Wilshire Grand Center, also known as the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, is on schedule to open in 2017 with 900 guest rooms, 400,000 square feet of office space, and 45,100 square feet for retail and restaurants. The 73-story property will rise 1,100 feet to become the tallest building in the United States west of Chicago. Other features include a spa, a fitness center and 60,000 square feet of meeting space.

The 878-room JW Marriott L.A. Live in the downtown district is undergoing an expansion that will add a 755-room hotel tower. The property is part of L.A. Live, which includes the 123-room Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles. When this latest addition is completed by 2018, the complex will offer a total of 1,756 guest rooms and more than 200,000 square feet of function space.

The 285-room Hotel Figueroa, which opened in 1926 in the downtown district, will undergo a $30 million renovation to restore its original Spanish Mediterranean décor. The hotel also is adding a garden that will supply fresh vegetables to its three kitchens. Function space at the property totals more than 20,000 square feet.

The Los Angeles Convention Center underwent a $10 million makeover last year. Enhancements include new roofing and carpeting, an overhaul of the center's parking facilities and an upgraded technology infrastructure. In addition, the venue's 299-seat theater was outfitted with new audiovisual capabilities.

In September, a new museum called The Broad (rhymes with "road") will open in the downtown Grand Avenue cultural corridor. The $140 million, 120,000-square-foot venue will have two floors of gallery space to hold nearly 2,000 works of postwar and contemporary art, and the venue will include a lending library as well as an adjacent 24,000-square-foot outdoor pedestrian plaza. General admission will be free. The Broad aims to attain LEED Silver certification.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Westside Los Angeles completed a renovation last May. All 375 regular guest rooms and nine suites received upgrades and now sport new carpeting, décor and in-room amenities. The hotel has 22,000 square feet of function space.
