Local Update

The 300-room, $150 million Hilton Norfolk the Main has opened along the downtown waterfront. The hotel's 39 meeting rooms, totaling 42,000 square feet of space, collectively are called the Exchange. Among the property's food-and-beverage options are Saltine, a street-level seafood restaurant; Varia, an upscale Italian eatery; and Grain, a rooftop beer garden. For recreation, there's an indoor pool with a skylight above and a human-sized chessboard on the deck.

At the 455-room Norfolk Waterside Marriott, whose 60,000 square feet of meeting space was renovated in 2015, upgrades are being made this year on the dining room and fitness center.

An extensive $10 million renovation project has updated all 468 rooms and 46,000 square feet of meeting space at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel. The City Dock restaurant also was redone, a new 24/7 market was added in the lobby, the health club was expanded and the outdoor pool area was redesigned.

A $40 million reinvention of the city's Waterside Festival and Marketplace has been completed, and the entertainment area is now called the Waterside District. Guy Fieri's Smokehouse and a Blue Moon Taphouse are open for dining, Stripers Waterside seafood restaurant debuts soon and the Harbor Club welcomes private events for up to 500.

Meeting Hotels: The city's meeting properties include the 468-room Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, 455-room Norfolk Waterside Marriott, 300-room Hilton Norfolk the Main and 208-room DoubleTree Hotel Norfolk Airport Hotel.
