Puerto Rico's inventory of luxury hotels continues to expand. Already open are the 139-room St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort (above) and the 157-room W Retreat & Spa. Coming soon: the 371-room JW Marriott Hotel & Resort (this year) and the 130-room Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach Resort & Spa in 2012.
The new 139-room St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort opened last November in Rio Grande. The property has an 18-hole golf course, a Remede Spa and 16 meeting rooms.
The 222-room boutique Verdanza Hotel, formerly the Holiday Inn San Juan, opened last year in San Juan. Near the beach in the Isla Verde district, it is the only independent, full-service hotel in the island's capital city. The property has more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as three restaurants.
The 157-room W Retreat & Spa, Vieques Island, debuted last spring. The hotel, the first W in the Caribbean, has three indoor meeting rooms and four outdoor event spaces, plus a spa and two beaches.
The Caribe Hilton Hotel has completed the addition of its 96 oceanfront Condado Lagoon villas, giving the property a total of 910 guest rooms. Villa guests can enjoy all the facilities of the Caribe Hilton, as well as a private beach and pool area.
The $106 million restoration of the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, one of San Juan's most renowned properties, is slated for completion this spring. The property will feature 312 guest rooms, 15,000 square feet of meeting space and four restaurants.
La Concha, a Renaissance Resort, recently celebrated the completion of a new 253-suite tower, which gives the property a total room count of 483.
The 300-room Marriott Courtyard Convention District in San Juan is scheduled to open in late 2012.
The 371-room JW Marriott Hotel & Resort at Coco Beach is slated to open this year. The property will have nearly 21,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 12,000-square-foot ballroom, seven meeting rooms, two boardrooms and five hospitality suites. Other offerings include a 36-hole championship, Tom Kite-designed golf course; a 17,775-square-foot spa and fitness center, and a 6,370-square-foot casino.
The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach Resort & Spa is scheduled to open in November 2012. The 130-room resort will be part of a $2.2 billion tourism and residential development that will include a second luxury hotel, luxury residential units and two 18-hole golf courses.
The Mayagüez Resort & Casino is slated to unveil its new 60-room tower (for a total of 200 guest rooms) this spring. Other additions include a new rooftop restaurant. The property has 12,144 square feet of meeting space and a 9,200-square-foot convention center.
The 112-room Rincón Beach Resort completed a multimillion-dollar expansion last month, giving the boutique property additional meeting space and conference facilities to accommodate groups of up to 300 people.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts opened the 503-room Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino last year. The property, next to the Puerto Rico Convention Center, is the first new full-service hotel and casino to be built in San Juan in more than a decade. It features 35,000 square feet of meeting space and a 57,000-square-foot pool deck that can be used for outdoor events. Other highlights include a 7,000-square-foot spa.
Meeting and incentive properties in Old San Juan include the 240-room Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel and 68-room Hotel El Convento.
The Convention Center District has the 503-room Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino.
On the beach between Old San Juan and Condado is the 910-room Caribe Hilton.
Condado has the 570-room Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, 525-room San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and 248-room La Concha, a Renaissance Hotel.
