The debut of several luxury hotels and large meeting venues has transformed Fort Lauderdale Beach into a major upscale meetings destination in recent years.

The latest: last year's opening of the posh, 433-room Westin Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale (formerly the Sheraton Yankee Trader), and its new 30,000-square-foot conference center in December 2009. Resort highlights include a rooftop infinity pool, Shula's steak house and the Heavenly Spa by Westin.

A bit south, the 486-room Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel, once the Yankee Clipper, reopened in February after a complete overhaul.
