Macau IslandThis former Portuguese colony, made up of three small islands, has an abundance of colonial architecture, an engrossing counterpoint to its busy markets, enigmatic temples and narrow streets.
On Macau Island, the 600-room Wynn Macau will open in fall 2006, while in Taipa Island, across a three-mile bridge, the 1,500-room Venetian Macau and 600-room MGM Grand Macau are coming in 2007. These massive projects will bring new competition for the existing Macau Forum and Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Center.
To escape the bustle, visit Coloane Island and the temple of A-Ma. The best coffee and custard tarts (a delicacy here called nata) are at Coloane Village’s Lord Stow Bakery. A 208-room Westin presides over Hác Sá Beach.
