The Mexican Pacific resort town of Puerto Vallarta, on the scenic and swim-friendly Bay of Banderas, counts a recently opened convention center and more than 12,000 hotel rooms among its perks.

Lodging is available to suit a variety of requirements and tastes. The hotel zone is home to a number of all-inclusive resorts, such as the 331-room Now Amber and the adjacent 271-room Secrets Vallarta Bay, both of which opened last spring. In the city center, near the malecón (boardwalk), are converted historic homes such as Casa Dulce Vida, a seven-suite villa with a pool and terrace. The house can sleep about 20 guests.
