This venerable waterfront town is carving out a hot new identity.

Marriott, in particular, has taken a shine to Maine's largest city. The lovely 110-room Press Hotel, an Autograph Collection property, opened in 2015, and ground will be broken this year on another entry for the brand, the 148-room Hotel Portland, which will be connected to the new 25,000-square-foot raw-space event facility, Brick South. The 178-room AC Hotel Portland Downtown/Waterfront opens late this spring.

Both the Union restaurant at the Press Hotel and Blue Fin at the nautically inspired, 101-room Portland Harbor Hotel showcase how far the city's culinary scene has come.

The largest group hotel is the Holiday Inn by the Bay, with 30,000 square feet of event space.
