Short rib dish from Barringtons RestaurantIn good taste. A short drive south from Charlotte's convention center leads to Barrington's Restaurant, a cozy 45-seat bistro serving "upscale American with a homey twist." On the menu: seasonal delights made with local ingredients. Among entrée favorites is braised beef short rib with glazed root vegetables and potato galette (left).

Bechtler Museum of Modern ArtMuseum quality. Opened in January 2010, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art has become a star in Charlotte's cultural offerings, featuring works that once were held privately by the Bechtler family in Switzerland. Inside the striking building, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, are pieces by the best of the mid-20th century, including Calder, Le Corbusier, Giacometti, Miró, Picasso and Warhol.

Olde Mecklenberg Brewerys Tap Room

Local suds. Tuesday is Pint Night at the Olde Mecklenberg Brewery's Tap Room, and free tours of the works are available Saturdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. The signature brew is the OMB Copper, a Düsseldorf-style Altbier. Also on tap: OMB Mecklenberger, a lighter Bavarian-style lager, and a seasonal brew.

Orchid display

Flower Fix. Spring might be a month away but buds are blooming at the Orchid Conservatory at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. This year's Orchid Spectacular, featuring gorgeous displays of some 5,000 species, runs through March 18.
