TV Dinner. In this food-rich city, there's no difficulty finding a restaurant helmed by a celebrity chef. Girasol features the talents of Top Chef contestant CJ Jacobsen and a sustainable local menu. Try a delightful salad featuring beets and berries, pictured above, and follow it up with the pièce de resistance, whole fried red snapper.

Shop Alfresco. Is it the first ever? That's debatable, but the Original Farmers Market is an open-air delight with numerous eateries, specialty grocers and fun shops. Stalls sell everything from kitchen magnets and lunch boxes to hot sauces, candles and shoes. Bennett's Ice Cream makes their own, and Du-Par's Pie Shop bakes fresh daily. And yes, there are several produce stands, such as Farm Boy, pictured above.

Good Humor. Jon Stewart of The Daily Show regularly welcomes Kristen Schaal to poke fun at the world; she also can be seen live Monday nights here at the Virgil theater with co-host Kurt Braunohler in Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen, which features comics, sketches, music and "the occasional oddity."

Deep See. L.A.'s Griffith Observatory invites visitors to peer at the heavens through its Zeiss telescope. On Dec. 9, an outdoor star party takes place from 2 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

The Week's Best. The L.A. Times' entertainment writers lay out the city's top shows and more in a weekly roundup. For details, go to and choose Critics' Picks under Entertainment.
