Cordova's temperatures are cold, although its location on Prince William Sound provides a moderating effect. In winter, temperatures average 20-30 F/-6 to -1 C, and in summer, averages are 50-72 F/10-21 C. Annual precipitation is 167 in/424 cm, including 80 in/203 cm of snowfall. In 2012, the town experienced what local meteorologists referred to as "Snowpocalypse," receiving almost 17 ft/5.3 m of snow and 44 in/112 cm of rain between 1 November and mid-January.
The aurora borealis (northern lights) is often visible in the long, dark winter nights, complemented by stunningly beautiful clear and cold winter days; by contrast, summer enjoys near constant daylight and moderately cool temperatures. More often than not, the forecast also calls for rain.
