American Airlines and Cuba Travel Services intend to launch charter flights to Havana from the West Coast later this year, the first since travel restrictions were eased. "We stand ready to offer scheduled service as soon as the United States and Cuba allow commercial flights," added Art Torno, American Airlines senior vice president of International and Cargo.

The new charter service is scheduled to operate between LAX and José Martí International Airport on Saturdays, beginning Dec. 12. American also will operate a Saturday flight between Miami and Havana. Both routes will be sold by Cuba Travel Services.

The new routes bring American's offerings to 22 weekly flights from Miami, Tampa and Los Angeles to five Cuban destinations: Camaguey, Cienfuegos, Havana, Holguin and Santa Clara. The carrier has operated charter flights to Cuba since 1991.
