New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans Aviation Board announced plans for a new $826 million airport. Construction, which will take place on the north side of the existing Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, is expected to begin in 2014 for completion in 2018, coinciding with the city's 300th anniversary. Operations at the current facility, which eventually will be repurposed, will not be affected by construction. The new airport's capacity is not yet finalized.
