Doha-based Qatar Airways will join the Oneworld Alliance within the next 12 to 18 months, the carrier and the airline network announced at a press conference Monday. Qatar is the first of the three major airlines based in the Gulf to join a global alliance, and the second in the Middle East to do so. Royal Jordanian has been a Oneworld member since 2007. Qatar Airways will move its headquarters to the New Doha International Airport when the facility opens sometime next year. The carrier joins Oneworld's 11 active member carriers and three member-elect airlines; the alliance will serve 856 destinations in 159 countries.
