Airfares and hotel rates paid by North American-based American Express Business Travel clients in May reflect continued cost increases, according to data released this week. The average airfare paid was up 7.5 percent year-over-year for domestic travel, while international fares grew by 8.7 percent. Average international hotel room rates skyrocketed by 11 percent over last year, while domestic rates inched up just 2 percent. “Sustained demand and increasing costs have given suppliers pricing power throughout 2011, a significant shift from the recession,” observed Christa Degnan Manning, eXpert insights research director, American Express Global Business Travel.
