American Express Business Travel, which has recorded a double-digit increase in transaction volume over last year, released its third-quarter Business Travel Monitor last week. According to the report, airfare and hotel rates both increased in year-over-year comparisons. Third-quarter average domestic airfare paid by Amex clients was up by 6 percent, to $228, while international airfares grew by 8 percent, to $1,781. Domestic hotel booked rates grew by 3 percent, to $148. The pricing trends will likely continue, according to Christa Degnan Manning, director of eXpert Insights Research for Amex. "Global Advisory Services has already seen an average increase of more than 7 percent in corporate rates worldwide this year for 2011 business travelers," she added.
