In the wake of the police shootings that occurred Thursday night, the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau issued the following statement from Phillip J. Jones, president and CEO of the bureau, to media outlets on Friday:

We are deeply saddened by the unthinkable tragedy that occurred in our city overnight. We pray for all of the families involved in this senseless act.

We know that Dallas has the finest police force in the country. Those brave men and women who work to keep Dallas safe every day were targeted in a calculated attack on law enforcement as they protected the peaceful protesters' First Amendment rights. The Dallas Police Department is confident the downtown area is safe and there is no active threat. However, several streets are still closed. We encourage residents and visitors to tune in to local media outlets for the very latest information. The city is also providing information here

As our hearts heal and our city leaders gain clarification on what occurred, we as a community will unite. We must not allow senseless acts of violence to strike fear in our hearts and disrupt our freedom.

We appreciate your ongoing support, thoughts and prayers.
