San Jose Mayor Chuck Read and the City Council unanimously approved the City Manager's recommendation to discontinue work on a request for proposal for the management of the San Jose Convention Center and several cultural facilities. The announcement comes nearly one year after the San Jose City Council voted to solicit for requests for proposal for a new management team after Team San Jose ran over budget and had handed out large bonuses to its staff. In early 2011, Bill Sherry was appointed the organization's CEO and, along with a new chief operating officer, Dave Costain, and consulting firm Convention Sports and Leisure, Team San Jose has convinced the city to renew the relationship. "I support the vision and goals of Team San Jose's new leadership," said Chuck Reed, Mayor of San Jose, in a statement. "This extension will allow Team San Jose to build on its recent progress in bringing business to our convention center that will generate new revenues, hotel room nights and jobs in our community." Stated Team San Jose's Bill Sherry: "This is a great signal to our customers and the community that Team San Jose is here to serve their needs. Today's vote of confidence is a positive move forward. With a new state-of-the-art convention facility coming online in 2013 that proudly reflects our position as the capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose has a lot to offer convention planners."
