When planning last-minute or on a tight budget, consider airport meeting facilities

Burdened as they are with increasing traffic, declining service and lots of screaming babies, the nation’s airports usually are places travelers try to enter and leave as quickly as possible. But think twice before darting out of that terminal building: Many airports now offer meeting spaces that are comfortable, affordable and believe it or not quiet.

In addition to the meeting rooms that major airlines rent at their clubs, several airports, such as those in Phoenix, Minneapolis and Atlanta, now have their own conference centers that allow for convenient fly-in meetings just a few steps from the gate. And Laptop Lane, a company that operates conference rooms in Seattle and Denver, plans to open new conference centers before the turn of the century at six more U.S. airports.

Following is a sampling of some of the facilities available at airports around the country.

Atlanta Hartsfield
Executive Conference Center (airport-owned)
Facilities: Twenty-four meeting rooms, including a 15-person boardroom, a 40-person press-conference room and two 40-person classrooms
Amenities: Televisions, VCRs, overhead projectors, computer connections. Catering, including continental breakfast, light lunch and afternoon snacks, is available for an additional fee.

Facilities: More than 2,400 square feet of flexible meeting space that accommodates meetings for four to 40 people, plus an 85-seat auditorium
Amenities: Available for rent are flip charts, overhead projectors, TVs, VCRs, LCD panels. Catering also is available.
Fee for use: From $75 per day for four-person conference room to $110 per day for 30-person, theater-style conference room setup

US Airways Business Center
Facilities: Seven conference rooms with capacities of five to 10 people each
Amenities: Speakerphones, white boards, flip charts. Available for rent are PC-projection units, overhead projectors, conventional slide projectors, TV and VCR. With a minimum one-hour conference room rental, customers have complimentary access to support services including photocopiers, calculators, document shredders, notary services, personal computer and laser printer. Credit card-operated fax machines also are available.

Facilities: The Executive Center, which is in Terminal 3, has 19 conference rooms seating up to 15 each.
Amenities: Speakerphones, presentation boards, tackable walls. Also included are complimentary coffee, tea and ice water. Catering services can be arranged with advance notice. Available for rent are TV, VCR, slide and overhead projectors. Services such as notary, message, court reporting and secretarial can be arranged.
