The American Society for Testing and Materials International has published seven of the nine green meetings standards it has been developing for four years with the Convention Industry Council's Accepted Practices Exchange. Now available to the meetings industry are breakdowns in the areas of A/V, communication and marketing materials, destinations, exhibits, F&B, on-site office, and transportation. Still to be published are standards on accommodations and meeting venue. The standards were initially proposed by the Green Meetings Industry Council in discussions with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In July 2008, as the process became more involved, the CIC committee began working with ASTM International, which is a voluntary standards-development organization. Through each stage, members of the ASTM community read and voted on the evolving documents, including people unfamiliar with the meetings industry. Each of the standards addresses staff management and environmental policy, communications, waste, energy, air quality, water, procurement and community partners. The standards are available for $40 to $46 each through ASTM International. After the ninth standard is complete, all nine will be collected into a compilation. ASTM members get one free volume of all nine standards with their membership dues.
