The W San Francisco has been awarded Silver LEED certification, the first LEED designation for an existing building belonging to a major hotel brand, according to Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The property also is certified as a Green Business by the state of California, and it won a 2008 Good Earthkeeping award, recognizing environmental leadership, from the California Hotel & Lodging Association. At the W, more than 70 percent of guest-room lighting and 90 percent of back-of-the-house lighting is energy efficient; the hotel's HVAC cooling towers have been replaced with energy-efficient models, saving 300 kWh per year; and motion sensors power off the cooling system in unoccupied guest rooms.
