A new Andaz hotel -- the first property in Hyatt's Andaz brand in Mexico -- will open next month at Mayakoba, an ecoresort located in Mexico's Riviera Maya region.
Located just north of Playa del Carmen on 590 acres of oceanfront property, amid preserved mangroves and lagoons, Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya will feature a nature-inspired design that incorporates elements of native Mayan culture. The resort's 214 guest rooms, for instance, will be spread across 28 buildings inspired by more than 200 bird species found at Mayakoba, but will also be adorned with Mayan symbols. The sunken lobby, likewise, will have a circular water feature denoting the area's natural underground reservoirs, but will also have an oculus through which to view the stars and sky -- a nod to Mayans' appreciation for astrology.
The property will include four restaurants; a 10,000-square-foot spa with a 24-hour gym and a yoga studio; three outdoor pools, including a lap pool and a beachside pool; a secluded beach; and 14,000 square feet of meeting space.
"We are thrilled to open this incredible resort in the compelling, eco-friendly destination of Mayakoba. We think it is an ideal location for the Andaz brand's first Mexico property," said Lin Schatz, general manager of the resort. "The region is filled with lush nature and a rich Mayan culture, which we will utilize across all aspects of the property from the unique design and native cuisine to indigenous spa treatments, local partnerships and authentic Mexican hospitality. We look forward to offering our guests inspiring new experiences that will fully immerse them in the local culture during their stay."
