The 119-room Avani Avenida Liberdade Lisbon Hotel has opened in Portugal, the first of the brand to open in Europe. Avani is a collection of upscale properties from Bangkok-based Minor Hotels Group.

"We are proud to launch our first European hotel in Lisbon," said Alejandro Bernabe, group director, Avani Hotels & Resorts. "Lisbon is the perfect fit for the Avani brand, as it has an incredible sense of design and community and it is affordable."

A $1.6 million renovation has been completed at the property, the former Tivoli Jardim Hotel, as the facade was redesigned along with the guest rooms, the lobby and the reception area. An Avanifit gym also was added.

The rooms now are decorated shades of plum, black and white, and feature Nespresso coffeemakers, satellite TV and high-speed WiFi; many have balconies.

The on-site restaurant, Olivier, was relaunched, and now serves "contemporary, ingredient-focused food with a strong Portuguese accent." For meetings, the Palacete Conference and Events Center is next door to the hotel and offers three floors of event space for groups of up to 260 people. The hotel is a 15-minute drive from Lisbon International Airport.
