February's hotel development pipeline for the Central/South America region accounts for 51,582 rooms, a whopping 40.9 percent increase over the numbers from a year ago. There are 319 hotels under development, according to the February 2014 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. Nearly a quarter (23.1 percent) of the rooms are in the upscale segment, while the midscale segment accounts for 21.2 percent of the pipeline rooms and upper midscale represents 20.4 percent. Only 6 percent of the rooms in the active pipeline are in the luxury segment. Brazil leads all countries with 32,047 rooms in the pipeline.
