China has become Starwood's second largest hotel market behind the U.S., with 62 existing hotels and an additional 86 in the works. Through 2011, one out of every three new Starwood hotels to open will be in China. The company's St. Regis brand is set to debut its first resort in the country this month with the 162-room St. Regis Lhasa Resort in Tibet. The luxury hotel's presence will bring Starwood's hotel brand count in China to eight out of nine; Element is the hotel company's only brand not yet represented in the world's most populous nation.
