Hyatt Hotels will develop the 408-room Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro on recently acquired oceanfront property in Barra da Tijuca in Brazil. The hotel will be built across from the beach in this upscale residential and commercial district and will include two full-service restaurants, a lounge, a fitness center and spa, a 9,700-square-foot ballroom, and nearly 14,000 square feet of additional meeting and function space. The property will be the second Grand Hyatt in the country, the first being the 470-room Grand Hyatt in Sao Paolo. No official opening date has been projected, but a Hyatt spokesperson said the company expects the hotel to open in 2014 or 2015.
