According to a report in the Times of India, InterContinental Hotels Group plans to open 47 new properties in India by 2020, mainly in the midscale segment. "Over the next three to five years, we have a pipeline of 47 hotel across India. We currently have 22 hotels here," Shantha de Silva, Southwest Asia head for IHG, told the newspaper. India is the third-largest market for IHG, after the U.S. and China. Currently, four of its brands are represented in India: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express. Asked whether IHG was considering bringing more of its brands to the country, such as Hotel Indigo, de Silva said it was doubtful.

In May 2015 IHG signed a management agreement with Indian hotel company Adyar Gate Hotels to manage the 106-room InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort. When it opens later this year, the hotel will be the second under the company's luxury flagship brand in the country, and its first resort property. IHG currently has 21 hotels, representing 4,100 rooms in 13 cities in India.
