Boutique hotelier Ian Schrager and Marriott International are expanding their joint venture, Edition Hotels, with a new luxury-lifestyle hotel in Barcelona.
"I am proud to further the global expansion of the brand with this incredibly exciting project in Barcelona. The city represents a great, cultural epicenter of Europe, making it an ideal location for the region's newest Edition," Schrager, who is chairman and CEO of Ian Schrager Co., said in a statement.
Scheduled to open in 2017, the Barcelona Edition will be located inside an existing office building that is being retrofitted. A collaboration between Schrager and Spanish designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, it will have 100 guest rooms, three restaurants, a club and a rooftop bar. The property will be in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella district, which is close to the Cathedral of Barcelona, nearly adjacent to the iconic Santa Caterina Market and just 15 minutes from the beach.
"We are delighted to announce what will be our third Edition Hotel in Europe, debuting in one of the most sophisticated and vibrant cities in the region," said Dan Flannery, global managing director of Edition. "Edition continues to thrive … and we couldn't be more excited about the potential for the brand throughout Europe."
Marriott originally unveiled Edition in January 2008, but stalled development plans when hotel financing dried up in late 2008 and 2009. The first Edition hotel opened in Honolulu in 2010 (it is now the Modern Honolulu) and currently has hotels in London, Istanbul, Miami Beach and New York, each featuring its own distinct design, but has a shared Edition "ethos."
In addition to Barcelona, future hotels are planned for Sanya (fall 2016) and Shanghai (2017), China; Bangkok (2017); Abu Dhabi (2017); New York City's Times Square (2018); West Hollywood, Calif. (2018); Reykjavik, Iceland (2018); Bali, Indonesia (2018); and Dubai (2019).
