InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has commenced development of a new hotel in downtown San Diego, it announced last week.
Scheduled to open in 2018, the 18-story InterContinental San Diego will be located on the site of Lane Field, a former baseball stadium in San Diego's North Embarcadero neighborhood, just a quarter mile from the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter. Part of a mixed-use development known as "BRIC," it will have 400 guest rooms, a club lounge, a signature restaurant, a fitness center and spa, a rooftop bar, an outdoor pool and 23,000 square feet of meeting space, including two ballrooms with full glass walls offering views of downtown and the San Diego Bay.

The BRIC development's $130 million first phase includes a 253-room SpringHill Suites hotel and a 147-room Residence Inn -- both of which opened in March -- as well as 27,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Along with the InterContinental, phase two will include 32,850 square feet of ground-level retail, as well as a landscaped walkway and plaza and a 686-space subterranean parking garage.

"The BRIC development will be a significant addition to San Diego's North Embarcadero area and we're so be working with IHG to bring an InterContinental to the second phase of this project," said Ambrish Baisiwala, CEO of Portman Holdings, one of the hotel's development partners. "This will be the first new full-service hotel -- with meeting space and other amenities -- on the waterfront for some time, and InterContinental is the ideal brand for this development."
