Kiawah Island Golf Resort, on a barrier island 21 miles south of Charleston, S.C., has broken ground on its first stage of redevelopment, which will continue through the end of 2020.

The project includes the addition of a 150-room luxury beachfront hotel with dining, a spa, retail and a ballroom, as well as a new state-of-the-art conference center featuring 10,529 square feet of meeting space and 11 breakout rooms, totaling 3,815 square feet. The redeveloped property will also introduce the new Cougar Point Clubhouse with a full-service pro shop, a sports tavern and locker rooms; a new villa check-in area; two new four-bedroom cottages adjacent to the Ocean Course Clubhouse; and the completely reimagined and enhanced Night Heron Park, with a new nature center, a pavilion, other activity spaces and dining.

"These developments mark an exciting chapter in Kiawah Island Golf Resort's notable history," said Kiawah Island Golf Resort president Roger Warren. "The developments will completely revitalize the West Beach area, which formed the nucleus of the resort when it was first developed in 1976, but it will also enhance and complement the world-class facilities, amenities, and programs that Kiawah has been proud to offer its guests over the past decades."

The new West Beach Conference Center is scheduled for completion by fall of 2019. Part of the newly revitalized West Beach Village, the Conference Center will be within walking distance of the new hotel. The meeting facility will be  just inside the main entry gate to Kiawah Island and close to the resort's lodging, dining, golf, tennis and recreational amenities.

"We are excited that once the new West Beach Conference Center opens next year that we will be able to accommodate larger groups and offer them state-of-the-art meetings capabilities," says Marty Couch, the resort's director of sales. "For example, while our current core meeting space can accommodate up to 700 people in a theater-style configuration, the core meeting space in the new facility will be able to host around 1,000 attendees theatre-style."

Kiawah Island Golf Resort is currently accepting RFPs for meetings schedule for fall 2019 and thereafter.
