Construction has begun on the new 216-room Live! by Loews St. Louis hotel, which will anchor phase two of the $260 million Ballpark Village, a mixed-use dining-and-entertainment district adjacent to Busch Stadium. The massive project is a development partnership between New York City-based Loews Hotels, Baltimore-based real estate firm the Cordish Cos. and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The eight-story, $65 million hotel, which is expected to open in spring 2020, will feature 17,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as a wine-and-bourbon bar that incorporates into its design 100-year-old traveling trunks once used to transport Cardinals equipment. A second terrace bar will have a media wall and offer stunning views of Busch Stadium, downtown St. Louis and the Arch. On the ground floor will be the Great Room, a sophisticated lounge with indoor and outdoor dining and entertaining space, including an indoor-outdoor bar called the Gashouse Gang, which will have fire pits and gas lanterns. The bar's name is a nod to the nickname for the World Series champion 1934 St. Louis Cardinals.

"We are thrilled to partner with Loews Hotels on their first St. Louis hotel," said Bill DeWitt III, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, in a statement announcing the hotel's groundbreaking. "Live! by Loews St. Louis will be an incredible anchor for Ballpark Village and a tremendous step forward in fulfilling our vision of creating a world-class, mixed-use destination next to Busch Stadium."

This will be the second hotel to carry the Live! by Loews name. The first, the 301-room Live! by Loews Arlington, Texas, currently is under construction and slated to open in 2019. The property will be part of a $4 billion development project in the Arlington Entertainment District that includes the Texas Rangers' new $1 billion Globe Life Park and the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium. That project is a partnership between Cordish, the Texas Rangers and the city of Arlington.
