Now that Massachusetts residents voted Tuesday in favor of full-scale gambling, work began immediately on the $800 million MGM Springfield casino resort, as heavy equipment was brought to the future site of a 3,500-space parking garage to conduct geotechnical soil assessments. The official groundbreaking on the resort will take place in spring 2015. The property will have a 250-room hotel with a spa, a pool and a roof deck; 125,000 square feet of gaming space; about 55,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and 45,000 square feet of meeting space. Also in the plans are an eight-screen movie theater, a bowling alley and an outdoor stage.
