Marriott International completed its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group Tuesday, and in the process became the largest hotel company in Africa, according to Marriott. The deal gives Marriott another 10,148 rooms across seven African countries, nearly doubling the chain's presence in the Middle East/Africa. Marriott’s pipeline for the region now consists of more than 65 hotels, or 14,300 rooms. The acquisition includes the Protea Hotels brand, as well as Protea Hotel Fire and Ice! and the African Pride Hotels Collection.
