Although it's the country's largest convention center, Chicago's McCormick Place has long been short on lodging. However, that's about to change, according to Marriott International, which yesterday announced a fall 2017 opening for the Marriott Marquis Chicago.
Directly connected to McCormick Place, the Marriott Marquis Chicago will have 1,205 guest rooms, including 44 suites, across 40 stories. It also will have fiber optic high-speed Internet connectivity, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a club lounge offering complimentary breakfast and workspaces, and 93,000 square feet of meeting space, including two 25,000-square-foot ballrooms, 43,000 square feet of breakout space, and a 4,000-square-foot 33rd-floor event space offering 180-degree views of Chicago and Lake Michigan.
"I'm honored to be a part of this project, which will not only be one of the largest hotels in the city, but will revolutionize business accommodation standards in Chicago," said Chicago native Catherine Mrowiec, who has been named as the hotel's general manager.
The Marriott Marquis Chicago is part of a newly revamped McCormick Place experience that will include the 10,000-seat Wintrust Arena, also opening this fall, and the new McCormick Square entertainment district, which eventually will be developed with retail, restaurants, and residences. Also part of the district is the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, which has 1,258 guest rooms and 43,500 square feet of meeting space.
