Edition Hotels, the boutique-brand collaboration between Marriott International and Ian Schrager, has grown slowly since its 2007 launch: Two hotels, Edition Waikiki in Hawaii and Edition Istanbul in Turkey, currently are open. Marriott confirmed to Reuters last week that three Edition properties in Bangkok, Thailand; Mexico City; and Barcelona, Spain, now have contracts to open. Marriott is in advanced discussions with another three potential Edition owners as well, according to the news wire. Meanwhile, the first Edition's owners have filed suit against Marriott and Ian Schrager, alleging that the defendants' lack of support for the Edition Waikiki has resulted in "outrageously low occupancy levels and average daily room rates for the hotel." The suit claims that "what defendants represented would be a fully supported new lifestyle hotel brand in the Marriott family of brands has turned out to be a nonexistent hotel chain." In response, a Marriott spokesperson said, "We’re very surprised and perplexed by this suit, and we plan to defend it vigorously. The two existing Edition hotels have generated a lot of excitement and positive reactions. We think the many stories in the media and positive customer reviews speak for themselves."
