The total active U.S. hotel development pipeline dipped 8.2 percent year-over-year, according to the March 2011 STR/McGraw Hill Construction Dodge Pipeline Report released last week by Smith Travel Research. There are 3,095 projects, or 325,407 rooms, currently in the nation’s pipeline. New York City leads the way with 6,763 rooms under construction, followed by Orlando and Washington, D.C., each of which has approximately 2,600 rooms under way. Orlando also posted the nation’s largest construction increase, shooting up 108 percent over last year. Convention capital Las Vegas, which has the nation’s most hotel rooms, currently has just 96 rooms in the construction phase.
