Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has opened its first property in the Carolinas, The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The 174-room Kimpton Cardinal is in the art deco R.J. Reynolds Building, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and features a lobby-level "Living Room"; a fitness center; and the 2,000-square-foot Rec Room, with a basketball court, a bowling alley, and an adult-sized twisty slide. The signature restaurant, the Katharine, specializes in French and Southern cuisine.
The hotel has more than 6,300 square feet of function space, including two ballrooms for groups of up to 400 guests and several smaller meeting rooms. Both the Katharine and the Rec Room also are available for events.
Like all Kimpton properties, the Kimpton Cardinal's design reflects its destination. Highlights include emerald green accents in guest bathrooms -- a nod to the state's official gemstone -- and oversized portraits of businessman R.J. Reynolds and Revolutionary War hero Joseph Winston (the "Winston" in "Winston-Salem") woven into boardroom and mezzanine carpets.
"The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel team is eager to share this landmark with the local community, devoted Kimpton lovers, and leisure and business travelers seeking a new and genuine experience in the South," said general manager John Esainko. "From the moment guests arrive, they will feel like family as they experience our authentic Kimpton hospitality with each detailed amenity -- from our customized Slumber Tea at turndown, to our preppy seersucker robes in each guest room."
In addition to The Kimpton Cardinal, the company is debuting another new property, the 178-room Mason & Rook in Washington, D.C., this week.
