The top three U.S. markets for hotel rooms under construction account for about one of every five rooms being built in the U.S., according to the September 2014 STR Pipeline Report. The New York City market on its own accounts for more than 12 percent of the total pipeline, with 13,605 rooms under construction. Rounding out the top three, Houston has 4,504 rooms in the construction phase (soaring 143.6 percent over last year); and Washington, D.C., reports 3,036 rooms under construction, up 5.9 percent year-over-year. The total U.S. pipeline includes 3,291 hotels, or 395,078 rooms, with more than 45,000 of those rooms in the construction phase. The total pipeline contains 14.3 percent more rooms than a year ago, with the number of rooms under construction up by 34.5 percent.
