As of Dec. 14, the Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina, which opened near Tortola in July 2010, will become a member of Marriott's Autograph Collection. This luxury private island resort is the first resort development to be built in the British Virgin Islands in more than 15 years. Scrub Island itself has a population of 11, according to Martin Smith, the property's managing director, "and that includes myself, my wife and my daughter." The resort offers 52 guest rooms, including spacious suites and villas. Also on-site: the Ixora Spa, several restaurants, three private beaches and a 55-slip marina. For meetings and incentives, Scrub Island Resort offers 7,000 square feet of function space, including a 2,100-square-foot ballroom divisible by three. The resort will be the first Autograph Collection hotel in the Caribbean and Marriott International's first property in the British Virgin Islands. Launched last year, the Autograph Collection is a group of unique, independent hotels, with more than 20 in the United States and Europe to date; this number is expected to double by the end of the year.
