The Sheraton Grand Bengaluru Whitefield Hotel & Convention Center opened for business Wednesday, the 100th hotel from Marriott International to open in India. The 360-room property offers panoramic views of the IT-rich city.
Marriott now has more than 20,000 rooms and 15 brands across 32 cities in the country. "India is one of Marriott International's most important markets in Asia, with the second-highest number of hotels and rooms after China," said Marriott chief development officer Paul Foskey. "Given India's robust economy and rising middle class, we see incredible opportunity to continue working with owners to open hotels from across Marriott's extensive array of brands, particularly in the upper-midscale, upscale and luxury segments."
Much of the company's growth in India to date has been fueled by interest in select-service brands such as Courtyard, Fairfield and Four Points by Sheraton. Marriott expects to open more than 50 additional hotels in the country over the next few years, many of them in the mid-market category. Upscale and luxury hotel interest is on the upswing, however: Three Ritz-Carlton projects are under development, in Pune, Mumbai and New Delhi, respectively.
The new Sheraton Grand in Bengaluru has nearly 65,360 square feet of meeting and event space, including the adjoining 28,000-square-foot convention center. The Scarlet Ballroom offers nearly 9,666 square feet of pillarless event space, complemented by a prefunction area that exceeds 11,000 square feet. For outdoor events, a lawn can accommodate as many as 400 attendees.
The property also offers an outdoor pool as well as a Shine Spa for Sheraton, a Sheraton Fitness center and a Sheraton Club Lounge. Among the half-dozen dining options on-site are the pan-Asian restaurant InAzia, which offers two private dining rooms, and Upper Cut, a grill and barbecue restaurant with a demonstration kitchen.
