 Starwood Hotels and Resorts and Wyndham Worldwide both posted strong second-quarter results last week. Starwood's earnings per share were up 43 percent over the second quarter of 2010, while Wyndham reported an EPS increase of 25 percent over last year. Likewise, both companies experienced solid growth in revenue per available room: for Starwood worldwide, 11.8 percent over last year's second quarter, and a 9.5 percent hike for the company's North America properties; Wyndham's hotel business increased by 9.5 percent in the quarter. Starwood reported that approximately 90,000 hotel rooms are in the active pipeline, while Wyndham claimed a development pipeline of 111,000 rooms. Both companies expect strong growth outside the United States.
