Preliminary numbers received by lodging data firm STR have yet to reveal significant effects of Superstorm Sandy, according to STR senior VP of global development Jan Freitag. "We were pleasantly surprised when 95 hotels in New York City submitted their daily performance data from Monday night to us," said Freitag, who explained that the normal New York daily sample is about 175 hotels. "The performance of the hotels that did report to us was not materially different from any other Monday in NYC," noted Freitag, "with occupancy just above 80 percent and an ADR around $290. So far our data is showing no impact positively or negatively from the storm." Freitag believes the storm's effects on area lodging will be much clearer by Wednesday of next week, when STR releases the full weekly data.
