Starting in November, renovations will begin on the Broadmoor West in Colorado Springs, Colo. The work will add 31 rooms to the West section, which dates to 1976, giving the property a new total of 775 rooms upon completion in May 2014. The structure will be gutted, rooms added on top, and the facade will be redone to match the cupola style of the resort's other buildings. The West's eatery will be renamed the Restaurant del Lago, serving Italian food. Also opening in May 2014 is Cloud Camp, a wilderness retreat on Cheyenne Mountain above the Broadmoor, on the site of the Cheyenne Lodge built by the hotel's original owner, Spencer  Penrose. At an elevation of 9,200 feet, Cloud Camp will have a lodge with seven guest rooms surrounded by 11 cabins. Guests will be able to take a two-hour hike up to the camp, ride mules there or arrive by Jeep. Meanwhile, opening this August is the Ranch at Emerald Valley, another of Penrose's former playgrounds, about 30 minutes up the mountains in the Pike National Forest. Featuring 10 cabins and a common-room lodge, the ranch will accommodate a total of 32 people. The cabins, built about 100 years ago, have been gutted and fitted in mountain style, all with wood-burning fireplaces. Guests staying at Cloud Camp and the Ranch at Emerald Valley will have access to all of the Broadmoor's amenities.
