The 500-room Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo, has opened in Sri Lanka's commercial capital. It is the city's first new luxury hotel in more than 30 years and Shangri-La's second in that country. It joins Shangri-La's Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, which opened in June 2016. The opening ceremony was attended by both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The new hotel is set on 10 acres on the Galle Face Green coastal promenade, a complex that's also home to residential and office towers and a high-end shopping mall. A 40-minute drive from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, the property features two ballrooms that can seat 1,500 and 450, respectively; six restaurants and bars, and a 24-hour fitness center.
In addition, an outdoor pool and bar have an urban-oasis vibe, while the seven-room, full-service CHI Spa offers treatments and products from all over Asia, with a focus on those indigenous to Sri Lanka. The hotel's suites feature individual butler service and access to the Horizon Club lounge.
