The upper-midscale hotel segment is likely to dominate the number of rooms opened this year in Central and South America, according to the June 2013 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. For 2013, the report forecasts 2,262 upper-midscale rooms, in 15 hotels, to open in the region. Upscale openings should be the second most common, with 1,707 rooms in 11 hotels, and midscale follows, with 1,350 rooms, also in 11 hotels. Looking to 2014, the midscale category currently is the most prominently represented, with 3,992 rooms in 32 hotels, followed by upscale and upper midscale. The total active pipeline for the region consists of 247 hotels, or 39,537 rooms.
