The upper-tier chain-scale segments showed the greatest gains in revenue per available room for the month of August, according to data just released by Smith Travel Research. Leading the pack was the luxury segment, which posted a year-over-year RevPAR increase of 11.1 percent, to $160.96. The upscale segment followed, with a 9.8 percent gain, to $74.91. Upper-upscale hotels posted a 9.1 percent increase, to $96.24. Industry occupancy for the month was up 6.4 percent over last year, and average daily rate inched up 1.5 percent. Overall RevPAR rose 8.1 percent.
