Construction will begin next year on a W Hotel on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The development will happen on a site previously slated to become a Waldorf Astoria, a project that was shelved in 2009 due to the recession. The hotel isn't yet listed on the Starwood Hotels & Resorts website, but according to the report it could open as early as April 2014. No additional information is available regarding amenities, number of rooms and event space. A W Hotel development in the city originally had been announced six years ago for 12th and Arch streets, next to the Pennsylvania Convention Center; last week, construction began on that site for a 246-room Hilton Home2 Suites. In other W news: The 283-room W Dubai, The Palm, will open in 2016. The property, on the Palm Jumeirah resort island, will have more than 25,000 square feet of meeting space, a business center, a spa, a fitness center and eight dining/lounge outlets.
