Not content to exist solely in the hospitality realm, W Hotels has created its own record label, W Records, and signed its first performer, R&B songwriter and producer Amber Mark, with more to follow soon.
The luxury boutique brand, which resides under the Marriott umbrella, released a statement last week saying that the new label will "support artists through every step of development, providing recording space, video-shoot locations, mixing and mastering, and, finally, distribution of the new sound via live performances, streaming and vinyl production."
Long known for being one of the more music-centric hotel brands, W has featured programs ranging from intimate shows in its Living Rooms to weekend-long, on-site music festivals; the chain already has established specially equipped "recording suites" at properties in Hollywood; Seattle; Bali, Indonesia; and Barcelona, Spain.
According to Anthony Ingham, global brand leader for W Hotels, "W Records is, undoubtedly, a natural next step for W and music. It represents a complete 360-degree approach to our innovative music programming -- one in which we support emerging talent, provide them a place to record, distribute their music and act as a live venue. We've accomplished each of these tasks in increments before, but now we can do it all."
W intends to add another three as-yet unnamed artists shortly, while Marks will kick things off with a live performance in New York City, her hometown, on Oct. 10. Her first single for W Records is a cover of "High on Your Love," originally performed by Kings Go Forth.
