Starwood Hotels & Resorts last week announced two new Mexican properties under development, both slated to open in 2014. The W Santa Fe, a 132-room new-build in the Santa Fe business district of Mexico City, will be the city's second from the brand. Planned for the property are several restaurants and bars, a 4,000-square-foot Away Spa, a fitness facility and 7,800 square feet of meeting space, including a 3,000-square-foot ballroom. The hotel joins Starwood's Westin Santa Fe, which opened in the neighborhood late last summer. The 180-room W Retreat & Spa Kanai–Riviera Maya will be the flagship property of the Kanai Resort, a four-hotel development planned in the Riviera Maya, on Mexico's Caribbean coast. The hotel will be the fifth W Retreat worldwide and "will appear to float on a carpet of mangroves," according to Starwood's announcement. The on-site Away Spa will have 10,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor treatment space, and the resort will offer 7,500 square feet of event space, including a 3,000-square-foot ballroom. Kanai will be six miles south of Playa del Carmen and 24 miles south of the Cancún International Airport.
